Zhang Heng And The World’s First Seismometer
Okay so I am a born and bred one eyed Cantabrian” – meaning I used to be born and grew up in Christchurch, New Zealand. Most of my family are still in ch-ch so as you can think about I have spent a variety of time currently learning about earthquakes. As a result of I believe information is energy I wish to share this data with as many people as possible. I apologise prematurely if any info is not fairly right but I have executed all I can to present what I imagine to be the details.
In 1947, this group of unknown young boys who referred to as themselves Moroka Swallows started their first league marketing campaign in the Moroka Jabavu League. Soccer directors on the time dismissed the group as one-game wonders and didn’t suppose the staff would last the season. Thankyou for your nice remark. The Government … Read the rest
The Franklin & Marshall seismograph is located about 93 levels away from the main target and felt the quake about 13 minutes after it struck, as anticipated The seismogram also reveals up two aftershocks later in the day.
An instrument for automatically detecting and recording the depth, direction, and length of a motion of the bottom, particularly of an earthquake.
An early seismic instrument referred to as the seismoscope made no time record of floor oscillations but simply indicated that shaking had occurred. A Chinese language scholar, Zhang Heng , invented such an instrument as early as 132 ce. It was cylindrical in form with eight dragon heads organized round its upper circumference, every with a ball in its mouth. Across the lower circumference had been eight frogs, every directly beneath a dragon head. When an earthquake occurred, balls were released from a dragon’s mouth, in all probability by an inner pendulum that moved back and forth in response to the route of vibration, and were caught by a frog’s mouth, which produced noise.
How does one quantify destruction on so large a scale? By the number of victims, structural injury or just by the potency of the earthquake itself? An excellent query to ask myself and ourselves before we journey to the epicentre of this horrific but enthralling event.
